Spellchecking in Emacs does not work

Spellchecking in Emacs does not work, even with the aspell-en package installed. When I attempt to turn on flyspell mode (Emacs's spellchecking mode), it says "Enabling flyspell mode gave an error."

This never happened in Taranis.

It turns out that spellchecking does work if you install the emacs-snapshot package instead of just emacs.
