Hi everybody,

I am planning to install GNUinOS on a second machine and have been revisiting some earlier threads for emlightment -- thanks to andyprough for introducing it to me and to Prospero for expanding on it, and most specially for the answer below (to Avron on 08/05/2023). This is the answer I couldn't find anywhere on the web or the Devuan forum.

This:

You can pick an iso image there and create a live system exactly as you would do for Trisquel

Does that mean we can use Disks to make a LiveUSB installer, just as we do with Trisquel?

Correction - I should have said 'Startup Disk Creator', not 'Disks'

I mostly use

Brasero Disc Burner
https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/burn-trisquel-cd-images
for live DVDs

and
dd of GNU Coreutils
https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-create-liveusb
for flash drives and SD cards, though I use a usb sdcard reader to burn the SD cards like flash drives.

I do not yet know where I can get source code for gnuinos.

Thank you for the info and links, Other_cody. Good to hear about using SD cards, nice alternative.

I had a quick look and will go back to read it properly, but I can see it's more involved than I imagined.

Hi @Sunny Day, I tried Startup Disk Creator for GNUinos just now. It created a live USB stick that booted into the GNUinos xfce live environment on two laptops for me. However, there were no network devices brought up on one laptop that works with both ethernet and wifi on Trisquel, and either USB mouse or USB keyboard weren't working on the laptops. I don't know if these device problems were a result of using Startup Disk Creator, or just something about GNUinos that doesn't work with those two laptops?

Very interesting, andyprough. I see what you mean, there could've been many reasons for the problems on the laptops you installed GNUinOs. (Could even be that Startup Disk Creator was innocent :)

I guess I will have to try and find out if the problems you encountered also happen in an old TP. I feel a lot more confident to experiment though, thank you!

Let me know if GNUinos starts to work on ARM64 and ARM devices.

@andyprough: I've updated the isos recently. Please, let me know whether the issue with your laptop's USB peripherals has been fixed when you have time. Thanks you all for testing gnuinos vdev!

Thanks @Aitor, testing it tonight!

Update - looks like everything is working - ethernet networking, sound, external mouse and keyboard, external monitor via HDMI. Nice!

I'm not near the new NovaCustom Corebooted NS51 laptop right now, this is on a 2018 HP laptop with an Intel i7 CPU and Intel UHD Graphics. I'll test GNUinos thoroughly on the NS51 at the end of this week.

Sounds lovely @andyprough! Was that a continuation from your test using Startup Disk Creator?

Yes, it was Trisquel's 'Startup Disk Creator'. Worked fine, no trouble at all.

Big thanks @andyprough, for that and for the png. Very informative!

I don't mind feeling like a donkey any more, not when asking (basic) questions - it pays off!

I tried the same GNUinos live USB on the new NovaCustom NS51 laptop tonight, which was connected to the internet by ethernet. Everything appeared to be working with GNUinos in terms of USB devices and external HDMI and so forth, but the built-in ethernet was not working. Not sure why.

The ethernet controller is:
Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 15)

It works well with Trisquel.
